Poets & Pirates Houston High SchoolWelcome to Houston High. Built April 2, 1953, it was used as a asylum, used to tend many of Texas' more deranged criminals and mentally insane. It's also home to many alleged ghosts that died there as well. In 1965, after the instiution was shut down for mal-practices on patients, the City of Houston held a vote on what should be done with the condemned building, which had started to tumble down on it's own from years of wear and teens playing in it. After some time, it was decided that the building would stay standing and eventually be put to use. After 23 years of planning, changing, and more planning, the city council finally decided on and remodeled the remnant's and turned it into a high school. Mountain Ridge high was the name it would be known has for many, many years. The name remained until 2001, when the mayor decided the name was inappropriate given their environment. So it was then that the school was renamed Houston High. Today, in 2013, it is slowly creeping up the ladder as being one of the most prominent public schools in the city and some may beg to differ and say the whole of the state.
